[advertisement.] TEMPERANCE. TO THE EDirOR. Sir, — I was highly amused to read the " sermon " by " Temperance," two days ago, in your columns ; the Scotch Minister must be a long way behind the times — have we not such noble men aa Canon Wilberforce, Canon Farrar, and the late Cardinal Manning, who view the question of alcohol from an entirely different standpoint ; such men's testimony is more worth our consideration. Even the London Times, in an article on this drink question, tersely sums up the matter thus :—": — " The use of strong drink produces more illness, crime, want and misery, than all other causes put together."' Even if the abolition of the desolating traffic in drink were to have an effect upon the revenue the reverse of what all have stated, involving us in greatly increased, instead of diminished, taxation, neither this nor anything else could justify us in deriving revenue from the vice and misery of the people. — I am, &c,. W. M. Rcnciman.

[advertisement.] ANOTHER VIEW OF THE QUESTION. TO THE EDITOB, Sin, — The following is by the Rev. James Graham Paterson, who is a travelling Evangelistic Missionary, and visited New Plymouth some five years ago. He also no doubt belongs to the Kirk, is a moderate, and probably enjoys his toddy, yet in the face of such enormous and heinous offences, perhaps you will allow him to twinkle Ms modest views on the subject. — I am &c, Jas. Paul.
