SCOTCH ECCLESIASTICAL BILL TO BE DROPPED. NEW CALEDONIAN QUESTION. [PER PRKRB ASSOCIATION^ London, March 17,—The Daily News states that the Scotch Suspension (ecclesiastical) Bill will in all probability be dropped. Sir E. Grey, Under Secretary of Foreign Affairs, in reply to Mr Hogan, said that France had never stated she would bo willing to exchange New Caledonia for the Falkland Islands. Mr Gladstone states he is unable to introduce a " Payment of Members Bill" this session although he will support the measure if it is brought in by a private member.
Captain Edwin telegraphed at 2 p.m. today :—":—" Indication? for frost to night and for low tides for twenty-four hours from noon to-day." The Rifles Band will givo an open air concert on Monday evening in th« Recreation Grounds, Captain Edwin permitting, of courßo. We referred the other day to a splendid ■ample of limestone which has been forwarded to to this office by Mr Smith, M.H.R., who had had them sent to him from the Mateinateaonga Block. Wo are informed that Air W. G. White, the manager of tho Bank of New Zealand at Hawera, who is the owner of the block, has been over tho land aud says that a reef of Hmeßtooe rising through his land and into the Kaitangiwheunu Block, which is et 11 owned by tho Government. If a tramway was mado to connect t.'ie limestone reef with the railway, tho farmers could be supplied at a cheap rato with lime.
