MRS CARRINGTON'S PETITION.
Monday, August 22.— Mrs Carripgton, relict of the lato Wellington Carrington of Taramki, who came to New Zealand in 1839 as Chief Assistant Surveyor to the Now Zealand Company, and with Captain Smith surveyed the City of Wellington, and afterwards occupied various public positions, ia petitioning the House for compensation for her husband's servic s.
INEBRIATES HOME BILL.
The House had high game with Mr Shera and his Inebriates Home Bill on Friday night, and up till 1.25 Saturday morning. Mr Fish attacked the bill in a mock-serious speech Mr T. Thompson said this was duo to jealousy, because the Home was to bo in Auckland — and Dunedin wanted it. Mr Fish said Dunedin didn't want it. They had no inebriates. Mr T. Mackenzie thought it was a very necessary measure for Auckland. Mr Fish wanted to know whether Governmet approved tho measure ? Mr Seddon said " Certainly." Then there was a mock heroic tirade against the Government for not taking tho bill up, roars of laughter marking every stag- 1 . Next, memberj began taking exception to the diction, and all sorts of catch divisions were taken. Mr Jas. Mills profossed violent antipathy to tho word •' touching " in ono clause, and had a division as to its retention. Then Mr Earnshaw wanted tho eight hours system affirmed in the work of the inmates, and bo it we it on. Mr E. M. Smith was shocked with the levity, and ' said this was an important measure, and memberd might yet be thankful to Mr Sheva for having tho Homo erected, and glad to avail themsslve? of it. Member after member added his quota of chaff, until the promoter finally lost his temper, and said that hon. members evidently did not grasp tho importance of the proposed reform . He had '"leceived numbers of letters from husbands who wished to have their wives taken care of"— this speech got no further, for fresh roars of laughter stopped its progiess. And so the foicc continued till the promoter agreed to report progress, and the Houso rote.
