London, August 19. ,' Many deaths from sunstroke are reported in Paris, Buda Pesth, and Vienna. PEERAGE AND OTHER HONORS. Baron Schroder, of J. Heiry Schroder & Co., merchants, has been elevated to the rank of Baronet; Lord Palles, member of Privy Council in Ireland, has been made a Privy Councillor in Great Britain ; Mr John Mulholland, Mr John Albert Rollo, and John Legh of Lyme have been raised to the Peerage. Baronetcies have been given to the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Captain G. C. Armstrong, E. H. Carbutt, H. F. Farquhar, Colonel Charles Hamilton, and Col. John Jaffray, of tho Birmingham Post. The following have been created Knights:—D. R. \V. M. Smith, Douglas Straight, Geo. Irwin, John Benjamin Stone, T. W. Warner, and W. Renny Watson. EARTHQUAKE IN IRELAND. London, August 20. , An. earthquake was felt in Dublin. MOROCCO AFFAIRS. ABlue Book containing despatches relating to the situation of affairs in Morocco has been issued. In one of the despatches to Sir Euan Smith, British Commissioner, the Marquis of Salisbury write 3 lamenting that the mission had been thwarted from the first by misrepresentations, the source of which, he said, it was not necessary to enquire, as it was clearly indicated that the French Government were at the bottom of them. 'FRISCO MAIL SUBSIDY. It is reported that the Post Office is averse to renewing tho New Zealand mail contract via San Francisco, which expires in November, on tho ground that the route via Suez is cheaper to England. MELBOURNE MERCANTILE BANK. London, August 21. The Financial New* considers that the revelations connected with the Mercantile Bank of Melbourne bear a strong resemblance to the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank, and it expresses the hope that the authors of the mischief will be punished. CABMEN'S STRIKE COLLAPSED. Paris, August 20. The strike of cabmen has collapsed. TRAPEZE PERFORMER KILLED. M. Leon, a well-known trapeze performer, fell seventy feet during a daring act, and was killed. FRENCH MILITARY MANOEUVRES. All the military mauauivres have been suspended owing to the heat. Further deaths from sunstroke are reported. COALMINERS 1 STRIKE. The coalminers' strike against the eni£ ployment of Belgians has been successful, and the latter have quitted the country. TROUBLES IN UPPER CONGO. Brussels, August 20. The disasters reported from Upper Congo are now confirmed, but the troubles are confined to that district. GERMAN ARMY. Berlin, August 20. The Emperor has informed the army that the statement that the service was to be reduced to two years is not true. His Majesty declared that ho would prefer to have even a smaller army to a larger one with shortened service. Tho Emperor remarks have caused a wide sensation. Count Caprivi, the German Chancellor, strenuously, advocates shorter service.

LARGE FIRE IN BERNE.

A fire ha.-! broken oufc in Grindelwald, Canton of Berne, and has not yet been extinguished. A number of buildings, including hotels, railway station, and post office, have been destroyed. TOURIST LUGGAGE BURNT. The whole of Grindelwald has been burnt, and the luggage of fifteen him dred tourists destroyed. FIRE AT GUINDELWALD. Berne, August 20. The coolness of the English ladies and their action in forming a line to pass buckets of water during the fire at Grindelwald, though their property was burned, has received much notice at the hands of the Continental Press. CHOLERA RIOT. St. Petkiisbubg, August 19. Cholera riots arc taking place in Hnghsefoka, Southern Russia. A nuuibccof houses weio destroyed, and several Cossacks killed. RUSSIAN RAILWAYS. St Petersburg, August 20. Russia has decided to construct a railway from Satnarcand to Tashkond, to be completed in threo years. CUSTOMS' UNION WITH BOKHARA. The Russian Government is arranging a Customs Union with Bokhara, including the erection of Customs barriers in Anudoria, thus securing India's trade and connection in Central Asia. PRINCE FERDINAND. The Novoe Vremya asserts that Russia will never consent to recognise Prince Ferdinand as ruler of Bulgaria. CHOLERA EPIDEMIC. Tho cholera epidemic continues unabated in many districts, and tho daily death rato in Russia exceeds three thousand. LORD RIPON'S APPOINTMENT. Rome, August 19. The Pope has sent a message to the Marquis of Itipon congratulating him on his appointment to a position in tho Government. AFGHAN TROUBLES. Calcutta, August 19. Three hundred infantry and cavalry, with two guns, have been despatched to reassure the native tribes men against the raid of tho Afghan rebels. SCALDING BOYS TO DEATH. Tangier, August 19. One of tho Sultan's eunuchs in Fez has killed five boy slaves by pouring ,c, c
boiling water over their heads. The Sultan has refused to punish him for the offence.
