DEATH OF Mb. JOHN KNOWLE3.^ Thb late Mr John Knowles, a well-known and very old settler, whose death we have recorded as having occurred in Wellington on Thursday, December 3, was born in London on December 4, 1823, and arrived in New Zealand in 1841, and was engaged by Colonel Wakefield, the principal agent of the New Zealand Company, in which service he remained until in 1844, tho suspension of colonisation operations by the Company rendering it necessary to discharge almost all its officers. He returned to England, and afterwards re-entered the New Zealand Company, and returned to New Zealand in 1853 as amanuensis to Mr E. J. Wakeflield. After being in partnership in Wellington with Messrs Holdsworth, he became connected with the Immigration Department, and went in 1860 to England as secretary to Dr. Featherston and Sir F. D. Bell on a Government Commission. On his return to Wellington in 1871 he was appointed first Under-Secretary to the newly-formed Public Works Department, and retired on pension in March, 1883. On addition to his provincial office duties, he edited the Wellington Independent for nearly nine years, the Wanganui Chronicle for one and the New Zealand Spectator for another period, besides being correspondent of several colonial newspapers and the London Tunes. He leaves a widow, a grown up son, and an unmarried daughter.
