TELEPHONE STATIONS IN GORGE.
Wellington, .May 21. i\ For some yeats past the-main railway lines have been undergoing a process of, relaying with 53ft> steel rails instead .•of the old 401 b iron rails. About 710 miles hare been so treated. On the Huronui-Blaff section steel rails extend as far south as Clinton. This work is done out of revenue, and together with repairs to engines and other improvement is effected without trenching on the revenue. The old rails are used for fencing, telegraph poles, etc. The vote of £40,000 asked for by the Commissioners is meant to be applied to entirely new plant to provide for the iacrea&ed traffic.
Three telephones have been placed in the Manawatu Gorge in order to give notice if anything occurs to impede the traffic.
