HOSPITAL: AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met on Wednesday. Present : Messrs Bellringer (chairman), Hurley, Davidson, Price, Heslop, T. Elliot, Corkill, and Malone. Jubilee Celebration,— -A. cirenlar was received from the Town Clerk forwarding a resolution asking co-operation in celebrating the Jubilee of the Province.— Mr Heslop wanted to know if they had to treat the circular as an ordinary application' to the Charitable Aid Board. — The Chairman thought that it could not be taken in that way.— Mr Cobkill thought that the circular must have come to them by mistake, as they were only delegates from other bodies, and they would, therefore, be acting in other capacities. Ho thought the only officer they could a»k to represent them was the relieving officer, who could take a prominent part in any Jubilee procession that might be formed. — The Secretary, who is relieving officer, wanted to know if he would take the family with him in the procession. — Mr Corkill said that he could do that. Mr Malone wanted to know what form the Jubilee Celebration was to take, as the settlers round his way were under the im • pression that the old identities, representing the year 1, were to drive in bullock drays in the proce- sion ; and the young generation representing the year 50 were to drive behind the old buffers in buggies. This was the prevailing idea of the fornf the Jubilee would take, with some athletic sports gathering thrown in. — The Chairman thought that there would be a sort of exhibition showing the progress made by the Province in its 50 years' life, in the form of its production.— Mr Malone said if tiiat was the idea, then the Jubilee Celebration Committee should notify the settlers of the form it would take if they desired to get their co-operation. — Mr Heslop said that at the Hawera County Council meeting the other day the impression was that the Jubilee Celebration would take something like the form as sketched by Mr Malone. In his opinion, he did not see what they had to jubilate over, •as business was so depressed at present. He thought they could afford to wait for some future occasion. —Mr Corkill said that any surplus of funds from the celebration might be devoted to the purchase and erection of a bronze figure at the breakwater. — The discussion then ceased, no resolution being arrived at, as it was understood the Board could not move in the matter, as they were only a delegate body. He would not like to vote for a fixed reduction, the necessity of "which they did not kno\v. — Mr Corkill thought that it would be better for the Co.nmittee to have a fixed reduction.— Mr Malone moved as an amendment "That tho words '10 per cent ' be struck out."— Seconded by Mr Davidson. — The amendment was put, and lost on the casting vote of the Chairman. — The resolution, with the words "at least " put after " 10 per cent," was then put and carried.
