THE SOUTH-EAST GALE.

NO GREAT DAMAGE DONE.

The south-east gale that blew so fiercely on Saturday night, up to about 10 o'clock, did not do so much damage as one would imagine, considering the force of the wind. A shod behind Mr J. T. Davis' shop in Devon-street was blown over, and part of a stack of empty bottles in the Criterion yard was smashed by the falling timber ; a chimney in a house in Courtenay-street, occupied by Mr W. Bailey, fell down, and some of the bricks came through the roof; on Standish's Hill Mr Jos. Fisher lost a chimney ; at the Convent considerable damage was done to fencing, part of the high galvanised fence between the chapel and Convent being blown down. Other damage has been done in different parts of tho town, but nothing serious, the loss being confined to old fencing principally. In the country it is reported that sheds and haystacks were blown down, and a good deal of damage thus occasioned. The gale blew itself out about 10 o'clock on Saturday und on Sunday the weather was remarkably fine and clear. Dr. St. George, we hear, has lost his mare " Black Eagle," which is supposed to have fallen over an embankment in Courtenay-street on Saturday night during the gale. The mare fractur d her spine, having fallen a distance of twenty feet. A portion of the fence was also carried away. She was in foal to "The Australian," and as she was a useful animal her death will be a great loss to her unfortunate owner.

The gale on Saturday also blew down four of Dr. St. George's large poplar trees, which are between forty and fifty years old.
