The Sweating Committee has, wo understand, practically concluded it^ labors, so far, at least, as tho taking oil evidence is concerned, and for all tho good it has done it neoil never have been created. The Commissioners in the other towns will, we are told, be in Wellington next week, when the draft report to be drawn up by Mr Fulton will be discussed and agreed ou. When the Commission rose ou Friday night, Mr Blair said that so far as Wellington was concerned, there was no such thing as "sweating," and there was really no need for them to sit there, for not a single case of hardship had been brought before them. On the whole, labour seemed to be very_ well paid. There were some trifling grievances, where subcontractors were concerned, but those might be remedied, perhaps, by new legislation, if thought necessary: but nothing had come before the Commissioners in Wellington I which involved anything in the nature of : "sweating." In Auckland the outcome of the Commission's enquiries resulted about the j same; whilst in Christchurch and Dunedin the evidence given was of such a nature that the workpeople seemed to be in a far better position than their employers. From the views thus expressed b} r the Commission in Wellington, it is very evident that the enquiry has been an unnecessary waste of money, and the only good likely to result from it is to show the public that the colony, as far as the labouring portion of it was concerned, is in quite as good a position as other places. This is very evident, for on holidays the labouriug class are to be seen well dressed and enjoying themselves at the various places of amusement. If they did not earn the money they could not spend it.
