Professor Licht, sugar expert, estimates the yield of European beet crop for the present campaign will give a surplus of (581,000 tons. The production during the last three months was 410,000 tons in excess of the same period last year. ROYALTY DOWN WITH INFLUENZA The Czar of Russia and King of Portugal are suffering from influenza. The Czar had a bad attack, this being a second one. Twenty per cent, of the Russian army is affected. Trade in Vienna and some of the German towns has been partly paralysed. The Albany schools and universities have been closed. Those cases which have occurred in England are doubtful and of a mild nature. TOOLE SAILED FOR AUSTRALIA. J. L. Toole, the well-known comedian, and his company, sail in the s.s. Brittania for Australia. THE LABOUR DIFFICULTIES. The permanent labourers have formed a union, and desire to separate from the Dockers' Union. The request has created a good deal of discussion among the dock labourers, who refuse to agree to the demand, alleging that the permanent labourers are working with the masters with a view to crush out the dock men.
