RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Monday, December 2. — Before C. E.
Rawson, Esq., R.M,
Alleged Cruelty to Animals. — John Foreman, jun., was charged with a breach of the " Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act," in having placed nine head of cattle in the Waitara saleyards, where they were left without food and water from noon on Friday, Ist November, until 2 p.m. on Sunday, 3rd November. — Police Constable Hewitt, who prosecuted, stated that the weather was very hot, and when he found the cattle they were so weak that they could not stand, and one heifer had died. — From the evidence of defendant and his father, it appeared that the cattle belonged to Mr Irvine, of Urenui, who had sent them to the Waiwakaiho saleyards on Thursday, 31st October. As they were not sold, Mr Irvine's drover arranged with Foreman, jun., to drive them along the road next day with his own cattle, he promising to meet him before he reached Waitara, which, however, he failed to do. Mr Foreman therefore put the cattle into Mr King's saleyurds, where Mr Irvine's employe could not fail to see them as ho came along. — Case dismissed. Dog Tax. — G. Bertrand (Registrar of Clifton County) v. Toko. Summons for dog tax. Mr Bertrand gave evidence on the case, and stated that the unregistered Maori dogs were a scourge to the sheep owners of the district. — Judgment for 5s fiae, 3s fee, and costs 7s; in default, 7 days' imprisonment. Judgment Summons. — F. P. Corkill v. J. D. Adlam. Judgment summons. Defendant to pay the amount, £4 2s 9d, by 17th December, or 7 days' imprisonment in default. — F. P. Corkill v. Rona. Judgment summons. Defendant to pay the amount, £2 Is, by 2nd January, or 7 days' imprisonment in default.
