COUPE "ING WITH RAILWAY.

Invercargill, Novemcr 26. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency are calling tenders for the cartage of wool from Waikato station to Invercargill, a distance of G5 miles. It is believed the wool can be carted cheaper than by rail.

Captain Edwin telegraphed this afternoon: — " North to east and south-east gale, with rain and considerable sea after 16 hours from now. Glass further fall. Indications are bad ! " The killing of the makutu at Kahui's hapu at Rahotu is still on, and is expected to last till Tuesday next. It has already been on a fortnight. In the Supreme Court, this day (Saturday), before C. E. Rawson, Esq., Registrar, in the estate of August Fischer, Inglewood, deceased, Mr H. R. Richmond moved that letters of administration be issued to the Rev. James McKenna, F.P., New Plymouth. The papers being in order, letters of administration were granted, subject to the usual bond being given. Mr G. V. Tate will commence shearing next week. He showed us to-day a clipping from a ewe hogget, measuring 16 inches ; the fleece from which lie took it weighing, he tell us, 181 b. We were to-day shown by Mr Walton, Brougham-street, a butter box made at the Sash and Door Factory, and designed for j the purpose of carrying butter to market j in pats. The outer box is white pine, and is fitted with six totara shelves which exactly fit inside, each shelf will hold about a dozen pounds of butter. The idea seems a good one for the retail trade, as the pats may be packed in small compass without destroying the print. It is stated that a great many natives assembled at Parihaka on Friday to witness the arrest of Te Whiti to serve the three months, in default of satisfying a judgment obtained against him by Mr Stitt of Opunake. The warrant for his arrest has not yet been issued, so the natives were perhaps disappointed. From reports it appears that there has been considerable damage done on the Upland and Junction Roads, and in the vicinity of theso roads by bush fires. Mr G. Marsh at Upland Road has lost considerably. He was compelled one day last week to remove all his furniture out of his house. MrHMatthews, on the Junction Road, suffered by the burning of grass, and a number of other settlers have likewise been affected.
