EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board met on Wednesday. Present ; Miss Hey wood, Mrs Richmond, Messrs T. Kelly (chairman), Bauchopc, FauU, Adlain, Symo, and Andrews. Resignation. — Miss Cowling's resignation as pupil teacher at the West Infants School was accepted from November 1. — A further resolution appointed Miss Co *rling as pupil teacher at Frankley Road School. Town Committee. — Two resolutions were received from the Town Committee relative to the late first assistant mistress ; and the salary paid to the fourth assistant mistress. — There was nothing decided by tho Board thereon. Ex'emion of time. —Mr Dobbie was granted six weeks' extension of time to complete the Eltham Road School. Architects Report. — Tho Architect rejorted that the Tarata School contract was completed. Ttkoranii. — Miss Alice Faull's services will bo continued until the end of November, on tho application of the local Committee, who cannot yet make a recommendation anent the vacancy. School Closing. — The Eltham Road Committee intimated that the school had been closed for 14 days. — The Committee are to bo informed that it is unusual to olose the school for more than three days without the consent of tho Board, and that the Board cannot approve of the action of the Committee in closing for 14 days — unless serious sickness has broken out — and request that full information be furnished the Board. A Uering Holidays. — Several opinions of Committees on the alteration of holidays question were received. — The Board will not, however, arrive at any resolution until all the Committees have reported. Omata and Koru. — The Inspector and architect are to deal with matters connected ■with these schools in the way of school furniture and repairs. Circular.— A circular was received from the Education Department inviting suggestions on improvement of the syllabus. Kavnata Road. — A le'tor was received from Mr B. M. Horrocks informing the Board that £11 odd had been collected to clear a site for a school at Kaimata Road, and that work had been commenced, and that the site would be ready by February. Written Off. — A memo from the Education Department informed the Board that the £1,000 that was granted to the Board in 1879, for the purposes of the High School, had been written off. A Ibert Road. — Mr C. A. Roger's name was forwarded to the Egniont Committee to recommend as a teacher for the Albert Road School. He was the only certificated applicant. Mangorei. — The Mangorei Committee had the following names forwarded from which to select a teacher for the Mangorei School : Miss E. F. Ellis, Mr F. Godfrey, and Miss E. Cundy. Notices of Motion. — Mr Fadll gave notice of motion, "That the present regulations with respect to pupil teachers, especially their removal, is unsatisfactory, and that the pupil teachers' regulations be so amended that they be under the sole control of the Board." Mr Faull also gave notice of motion relative to the leasing for five years, at a nominal rent, and under specified conditions, of blocks 117 and 118, Waitara West. — With respect to the latter motion, Messrs J. R. Clark (chairman) and Tatton, of the Waitara Committee, waited on the Board, and asked to have the blocks fenced. These applications will come up again under this notice. Wortley Road. — Miss Williams wrote asking the Board to put the Wortley Road residence in proper repair. — The matter was dealt with in the allocation of the building grant. Ingltwood School. — The Committee •wrote asking the Board to enlarge the Inglewood school, as at present it was far too small for requireaents. — Matter dealt with at allocation of the building grant. Transfer. — It was decided to transfer £100 from tho Education Fund to the Building Fund account. — This was done as there was a surplus in the former account, and the latter account wanted swelling slightly to meet demands. Allocation of Building Grant. — It was decided " That the sum of £70 be appropriated for the Waiongoaa residence; £50 for Midhirst; £60 for Inglewood school; and £31 for chimneys at Wortley Road, Stratford, and Egmont Village, making a total of £211." — It was further decided " That tho Waitara schools be amalgamated at & cost not exceeding £200." — It was also decided " That Mr Campbell's tender for the Warea residence was accepted." — An application from the Lepperton Committee asking the Board to erect a new school or residence, and offering £10 towards the cost, was considered during the allocation, but nothing waß done. High School Act. — The InspectorGreneral forwarded to the Board a copy of the new Act relative to the management of the New Plymouth High School. Ladies 1 Sewing Committee. — The Ladies' Sewing Committee reported for the year ending September 30th. They stated that more schools had obtained the highest marks than last year, but the work on the whole was not as good. In some cases this was attributed to the changes in teachers, and in the case of tho Waiongona School, where there had been no teacher for months, the sewing work could not bo considered at all, so little was there of it. The Committee then went into technical detail on the weSk points~in the specimens as a whole, and concluded their report by comparing this year'H marks obtained by each school with those obtained last year. — A vote of thanks was passed to the Committee on Mr Faull's motion, seconded by Mr Otsox. Ac ounts. — Accounta amounting to £639 18s 6d were passed for payment. The Board adjourned.
