SATURDAY HALF HOLIDAY. TO THB EDITOR. SlB., — I think the time has oome when an effort should be made towards uniformity in tbe practice of a half holiday, and I would suggest that the new Chamber ot Commerce should test the felling of its members at the next general meeting. At present all tbe Bunks and Government Offices close on Saturdays, and a good many people close on Wednesdays, the result being that it is difficult for employees who ought to be considered to join together in sports. I leave out of the question the manifest inconvenience of tbe Banks being closed on the day when moat country people come into town I believe that it will be fonnd on enquiry that there are very few towns ia New Zealand where Saturday is not the üßual holiday. Wednesday is our legal market day, and an attempt shonld be made to make it so in reality. After all, tbe matter is one of simple habit, and as the majority of the country population in the district have arrived within the last twelve years, there ought t# be no wrench felt in making tbe change, even though habits are lika facts, " stubborn thing*." —I am, &c. Clement W. Govktt.
Owing to repairs being made to the big firebell, townspeople need not be alarmed flt hearing its unusual tones in the daytime. There is some talk of the Band asking the Recreation Grounds Board to allo«v them to give uacred concerts in the grounds on Sunday utternoonß. The programme for the Boxinsj Day Hack Matting and the Anniversary Meeting were agreed on by the Jockey Club Com mit lee ou Wednesday night. The former will be advtrtibed in a few days. In tbe latter the distance for the big money has been shortened from 2 to 1} miles, and both big hurdle races struck oat. At a committee meeting of the Tarunahi Jockey Club, held on Wednesday night, at the White Hurt Hotel, it was decided to ask Mr Samuel, M.H.K. to reprrsent the olab at tbe conference of delegate! from the Metropolitan Clubs, which will be held in Wellington on July 31, (next Wednesday). This Conierenco ib to be held 1 3T the purpose of revising the rules oi rucing. The Committee also authorised Alt sara Paul and Bauchope to arrange ibrujtf with Mr Evett, the handicap^er, and Meeurs Andrews and Adams, who pork (be toulisator.
