Auckland, September 17.— Fiehtintf at Samoa up to the time of the leaving of the mail steamer had not been severe. The natives had rebelled against the German taxation, and the Government sent a strong: party into the bush to capture and disperse the rebels. The party came across a small uutpost of rebels, and at once fired into them. The fire was quickly returned, nnd kept up for some ticqe, the result being that several were killed and wounded. Both sides ot the Government party returned to Apia. The rebels remained in the bush. Both sides claim a victory, bat the advantage was decidedly on the Bide of the insurgents, who had only 40 men to about 500 on the Government side. There are over 4,000 ar:ued men now in the field, and serious fighting is anticipated.
