ELTHAM DAIRY FACTORY.

A meeting of milk snppliers to Mr Chong's Eltham Dairy Factory was held oa Wednesday last at 7.30 p.m . and a correspondent sends the Haxoera Star the following account of the proceedings :—: — Mr Chew Chone: said that, he was prepared to pay the following prices for milk for the next twelve months, viz : During the months of October to March inclusive at tbe nite of 2|d per gnlloD, and during the months of April and May, 2Jd per gallon, and during the months of Jnne, Jily, and August, 3£l per gallon, and durinar September, 2}] per gnll .n. The suppliers paying £1 per gallon for all skim milk that they take back, it being optionul with them ub to whether they take it or nor. Mr Chew Cbong stated that he was prepared to give a bonus of £1 per gallon to anyone who supplied a quantity of not less than 20 gallons per day on the average during the months of June, July, and August, and to anyone who supplied a quantity of not Icbb .than 25 gallon* per day on the average for the same period he would give a bonus of £1 per gallon. A few of the suppliers considered that the priois offered during the months of October to March was too low, but Mr Che wChong said that he oould not possibly give a higher price, as the price obtained for butter at that ti.ne did not warrant a higher price being given; and he also said that ho had not made any money out of the factory during the past year. During the winter ho had got a good price for the factory bottor, but owing to the small quantity oE milk received he had been at a loss, and h<* now offered during tho winter to anyone who supplied over twenty-five gallons, 3J I p°r gailon, which he thought should be sufficient inducement for the settlers to go ia for winter dairying. The meeting broke up without any decision btiiu? oomo to on tho part of the snpp'ierp, nnd Mr Chew Ch nj informs mo tlm', if tho suppliers do not supply milk on tho above terms, he will start milkinj; over a bun-)rod cows on his own account, and that ho will on no account gtivo a hi/hnr price Iban what h« offered. In my opinion tho settlers BhouM accept I bis term«, ne what ho offers is more than equal to the prioos they are likely to obtain for butter of ihcirownimnufaoturp and they huve ii certainty of gottin* their money nt the end of iha qu irter. IE they recollect tlio summer of 1836, I do not think they will like the prospect of butter makin? on their own account. It ia lo ba hoped that the aettlcis will aooept Mr Chonu's terms, as it ia by means of buttrr faotoriep, &o, that the district will prosptr.
