MOBB FIRES IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, September 5. On Sunday morning three cottages at Helensville, belonging to Mr. W. Adams, were destroyed by fire. Insurance, £400, in the Boyal. ' ATTEMPT TO BURN DOWN AN HOTfiL. On Straday night an incendiary fire was timely discovered at the Governor Brown Hotel, in Hobsonstreet. A son of the licensee found a quantity of rag saturated with oil had been placed in a room and ignited. The police are inquiring into the matter. Mr. Hauligban, the licensee, hab not his furniture insured. CRIMINAL SESSIONS. The criminal sessions were opened this morning by Judge Ward. There -were thirty-two cases on the calendar, but none ef a serious nature, FINDING WORK FOR AUCKLAND CARPENTERS, The Insurance Companies have come to a general understanding to rebuild in cases of losses on buildings destroyed by fire whereve^ it oan be conveniently done. ANOTHER FIRE AT PONSONBY, A house belonging to Mrs. Dowden was burnt at Ponsonby on Saturday. It was insured for £400 in the Colonial. The furniture, most of which was saved, is insured for £170 in the Boyal. ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD CREDITORS. Gibboene, September 5. S. M. "Wilson, late proprietor of the Albion Hotel, whose premises were recently burned, and who filed his schedule after the fire, was to-day committed fer trial, charged with concealing a large amount of property from the Official Assignee. The accused made a number of most, extraordinary statements with regard to the property, one being that his nursemaid owned a buggy in his possession, having paid £50 out of her wages for it. FOOTBALL MATCH. Wellington, September 5. The football mateh — Otago v. Wellington — resulted in a draw, there being no score. FEMALE SUICIDE. Chbistchuboh, September 5. Mrs. Kinley, wife of a cattle dealer, hanged herself on Saturday. She was depressed about family matters. A verdict of temporary insanity was returned. ACCIDENT TO THE S.S. JANET NICOL. Oamaru, September 5. The "steamer Janet Nicol got her steering gear out of order as she was entering the harbour on Saturday, and she struck a rook near the mole. She is making water, but it is not expected the accident will interfere with her work.
