The s.s. N Wanaka, from Manukau, was tendered with difficulty, at the breakwater, this morning, at 10 a.m. The s.s. Roturoa arrived in the offiag shortly utter noon, and proceeded for Manukau without being communicated with.
The Rifle Band performed tho following programme at the Bazaar on Friday night: — Quickstep, "Jubilee;" ditto, "Seeing Nellie home;" polka, "Paradise;" waltz, "" Lake sido ; " march, " Queen Victoria;" the trio of which is the National Antham. Mr. Garry conducted. The band plays again to-night.
A man generally known in the district as " Big Harry," says the Haioera Star) whose real name is Squire, has been arrested by Constable Franklin, of Manaia, for endeavoring at Otakeho, to comro.it suicide by cutting his throat' He was brought before the oourt on Friday morning and remanded for an hour or two for medical examination. At noon tho defendant was again brought up, and there was put in an affidavit by Drs. Lightbourne and CliiltOQ ; and oral evidence was taken from a neighbor, showing that defendant was, in the opinion of the doctors in a state of mind owing to which he was dangerous to himself and others, that he had endeavorod to cut his throat, but hud not done himself much injury ; that ho had done it. ho said, bocause tho dovil had had told him to do it, and would, no doubt tell him to do it again, and he would cut it in the right place. The Bench (Messrs Major and Bate) informed defendant that the charge against bin; was that he was a lunatic Was that true?" Defendant said that ho believed it was. Tbe Bench made an order, committing the man to the asylum.
