ANOTHER FIRE IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, September 2. A seven-roomed house in Cameronstreet, owned and ooonpied by Mr. Hedley, was destroyed by fire yesterday. The fire is believed to have originated with clothes hanging in front of the fire. The bouse is insured for £300, and the furniture for £100, in the Union. ANNEXATION OF KERMADEO. The formal annexation of the Kermadeo Islands was performed on Sunday, 21st August, The New Zealand flag was hoisted, and the proclamation of the Governor read. GUM DIGGING IN NORTHOOTE] ' Complaints are being made of the gam diggings in Northoote and other districts, and it is said they are practically establishing areign of terrorism. The chief cause of dissatisfaction, it is alleged, is that they consider themselves entitled to roam over private property to dig gum without the slightest reference to owners, besides outting up land required for agricultural purposes. The police have been asked to interfere. STEALING LEAD. Ghbistohuboh, September 2. Ah Sing has been sentenced to 18 months' hard labor for stealing lead. NATIVE CHIEF DEADj A Maori chief, Tari Tehoika, a leading man among the natives, died atKaiapoi yesterday. ANOTHER GIBL ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. Donedin, September 2. A domestic servant named Catherine Hastie attempted suicide by throwing herself in the surf at Ocean Beach. She has been remanded. A MAD FREAK. A man named, Carey committed' damage to the extent of £24 by breaking windows in the Bank of New Zealand and a publican's lamp. The offence was committed early in the morning. It was at first thought that someone was about to enter the Bank. REMAINS OF A WOMAN FOUND. Invebcargill, September 2. The upper portion of the body of a woman was found on the beach, near the river estuary. The remains are almost reduced to a skeleton. The only woman missing is Victoria Hope, an old "maggie" woman of high rank, who left Inveroargill some months ago to walk to River ton, and has not since been seen. A purse, with trinkets, and a few fragments of clothing were found on the remains, but the police are not yet able to fix the identity of the body.
