[per united press association.] CHARGE OF FORGERY. Auckland, Ootober 9. John Xiivosoy, oommission agent, has been arrested on a charge of forging a cheque for £200 on the Bank of New Zealand ia the name of Frank W. Foley. It is stated that the total amount Foley has lost through alleged forgeries is some £650. NORTH SHORE LAND SCANDAL. The following telegram has been received in referenoe to the North Shore land scandal : — " No land purchased at Devonport, but notice to take a piece was published. Price will be settled by Compensation Court. — R. Stout." LUMPERS' UNION WOUND UP. The Lumpers' "Union has been wound up, and the funds (£220) are to be divided among the members. THE PROBATIONERS ACT. Wellington, October 9. In the course of some remarks in the Supreme Court to-day on " The First Offenders' Probation Act," the Chief Justice said that during the thirteen or fourteen years he had been on the Bench there has only been some three or four cases before him in which, in his opinion, the Act would apply. He thought such cases as a young woman or a young person found guilty of silly acts for the first time were the proper class of offenders to be dealt with under the Act, and not every offender, of whose previous history nothing was known. SENTENCES AT DUNEDIN SUPREME: COURT. Dunedin, October 9. Mary Jane Docberty, arson, six months; Robert Kidd, sheep stealing, two months ; John McKean, for the same offence, was acquitted. SUICIDE AT PELOROUS VALLEY. Blenheim, October 9. At the inquest on Daniel Wilton, who committed suicide by shooting himself in the forehead at Pelorous Valley, a verdict of temporary insanity was returned. There appears to be no cause assigned for the act.
