CORRESPONDENCE.

OLD SALA AS OUR TRADUCER. TO THE EDITOR.

We are not responsible for the opinions ex preeaeil by correspondent 5. The wniei's ' name, as a guarantee of goct faith, m< t-l -be-encloned m the letter.

SIR, — I notice in the Illustrated London News of July 24th, in his echoes of tbe week, "old Sala," who calls himself " G.A.S." (rather suggestive), haß the impertinence to say the following : "I do know such a place as Hawera, in the Province of Taranaki, a township on the West Coast, about seventy miles from New Plymouth, a Beaport of a district famod for a production of potatoes and Innatics 1" I wonder if tbe proprietors of that paper know that Sala was never in New Plymouth, and consequently is drawing on his imagination ? I suppose if he bad called here and been boozed up, &c, we should have been " that delightful little seaport with iti fine, artißcal harbour ; splendid grazing country, whose streams are watered by the everlasting ■nowß of Mount Egmont ;" and he might have finished np by saying: "And the beer is remarkably fine, to which your deponent can testify." But old nosey didn't call here ; didn't get boozed up, and made much of, and I suppose hence the innuendo.— l am, &c,

Antigos. [G.A.S. was in a steamer that culled here, bat did not tome on to New Plymouth. —Ed. T.HI
