FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE WHITE CLIFFS.
John Rigby, a member of the A.G. Force stationed at White Cliffs, was accidentally drowned yesterday morning. From particulars ascertained of the sad occurrence, we learn that the deceased was in company with Mr. Joshua Jones, and another, who were proceeding from the White Cliffs to Mokau, their course being along the beach, and when rounding a point known as "Jacob's Ladder" the deceased was intrusted to take the harses round while his companions went over the Cliffs. Mr. Joaes did not see the accident, but after waiting for some time at the other side of the point, and the deceased not making his appearance, it was feared that something was amiss. Oa search being made, the horses were found, but there was no trace of deceased. Mr. Jones and his companion went back to the White Cliffs and acquainted Captain Messenger with what had happened, and a boat's crew was despatched under Captain Messenger to the spot. Several of the men dived into the water, but without any result. Having obtained grappling irons, the body was recovered last evening at 6 o'clock, in about eight feet of water close to the cliff The point is not safe to cross at all times, on accouat of the surf, riders having frequently to watch their opportunity and dash round the point as the waves recede. It is conjectured that Rigby, in attempting this feat, was caught by the waves, and carried off his horse. There are marks on his forehead apparently caused by the kick of a horse, and no doubt he was rendered insensible by the kick, and therefore unable to attempt to save his life by swimming. The body was conveyed to Mr. Pigott's Star Hotel, Urenui, this morning, where Captain Messenger will hold an inquest.
The deceased was much respected, being Nvell known in the district. He was stationed for many years at Urenui, where he owns some property, but was lately removed to the White Cliffs. He leaves a wife and family, who, we understand, are comfortably provided for. Rigby has always been a steady man, and by this means became possessed of some property.
