OPENING OF THE CANTERBURY EXHIBITION.
[by telegraph.] The weather this morning was gloomy and threatening, and the streets of Christchurch were in an extremely miiddj T condition from yesterday's rain, although there must have been nearly 40,000 people in the streets. The procession included ncarfy 4000 persons, and the display of banners and trade emblems was excellent. The building was densely crowded ; at least ten thousand persons were within the walls. Punctually at 11 o'clock, the Governor and Lady Gordon and sidle, accompanied by the Hon. Colonial Secretary, Hon. Postmaster-General, and the privates and officers of H.M.S. Miranda, arrived, and were conducted to the platform. His Excellency was then presented with an address, briefly setting out the objects of the Exhibition, and the promoters then asked His Excellency to open it. His Excellency read a long reply, and 7 then; formally declared the Christchurch International Exhibition to be opened. At the conclusion of Mendelsohn's hymn of-.praise, performed by the Christchurch Musical Society and the Austrian String Band, His Excellency and party retired, and the procession re-formed and left. The Exhibition itself is very incomplete, many of the exhibits not being yet unpacked, and very few of the bays being in order. Work is, however, being "vigorously pushed on.
