POLITICAL AFFAIRS IN EGYPT.
Paris, February 9.
At a meeting of the Council of Ministers yesterday, Mr. Cowan and M. do Chignieres, Controllers-General for Great Britain and France, formally protested against the Ministerial programme recently sent forth, and the action of the Cabinet in upholding the demand of the Notables for control of the budget' on the ground that the delegation of such powers to the Assembly was in contravention of the International agreement with regard to Egyptian finance, and would limit the powers of the Controllers-General in dealing with the National Debt. The Controllers-General further informed the Ministers that they claimed the right to have a voice in the preparation of the. entire budget.
HOSTILITIES IN TRANSVAAL. Capetown, February 8.
Intelligence is to hand from Transvaal to the effect that an armed force of Boers has" crossed the boundary defined by the Anglo-Boer Convention into native territory, and attacked tho Monsiua chief. The natives are in strong force, and repulsed the Boers. According to the latest accounts fighting still continued. MURDER OF CORRESPONDENT OF TIMES.
Constantinople, February 9. Telegrams have been received here reporting that the special correspondent of the London Times in Albania had been murdered by the Arantosan, Albanian tribe.
A RUMOUR CONTRADICTED.
Londok, February 8 (Later.) It is known that there is n» foundation for tho report which has been current, to tho effect that Earl Grauville has verbally protested to the Russian Ambassador against tho recent treaty settling Russo - Persian frontiers.
THE PKRSBCDTED JEWS,
In tbe House of Corninons to-day Mr. Gladstone was questioned as to wbat action, if any, the Government proposed to take in regard to the persecution of Jews in Russia. In reply the Premier deplored the outrages that had been committed against the Jews, but stated that the question was a local and not an international one. The Government would, he added, intercede with the Russian authorities when fitting occasion arose.
