Mr. Farmer, of Auckland, we hear, has been called to the Upper House. " Among the mining on dits from Auckland," says the Otago Daily Times, " we hear that Mr. Farmer, so well kDown as one of the largest original shareholders in the Golden Crown and Caledonian, has sold the whole of his interest in tbefle and other mines at the Thames to Mr. Thomas Bassell. The sum has not transpired, but it is varioasly stated at from £25,000 to £40,000. Mr. Farmer originally he'd 340 shares in the Caledonian, of which he sold about two months ago 100 to Mr. Russell for £10,000 ; and it is said he has now cleared out with over £80,000 from the Caledonian alone. It is scarcely to be wondered at that instances of such success so rapidly attained, should produce the excitement of which Auckland is now the scene. At the same time, it is not to be forgotten that Mr. Farmer steadily stuck to the Caledonian and paid up large and heavy calls at a time when its prospects were of the poorest, and* the shares were selling at less than the amount representing the calls paid opon them." To Prevent Flies from Seiting in Pictures, Picture-Feames, and other Fubnituse. — Soak a large bundle of leeks for five or six days in a pail of water, and then wash the pictures, &c, with it. A man who had a scolding wife, being asked what he did for a living, replied that he " kept a hot house."
