A DISGRACEFUL FEATURE
:— Broken Windows of Domain Grandstand Unsightly WHY DOES NOT BOARD EFFECT REPAIRS ? For its size, Temuka-has-probably one of the finest parks in the Dominion, and but for one disgraceful feature, this reserve would be wellnigh perfect. We allude to the shocking state of the grandstand, and its windows in particular. For some unexplainable reason,. the authorities have been concentrating on improvements and extension work in various parts of the Park, while for over two years the most outstanding building, and the one first to catch the visitor’s eye, has been sadly neglected. SOLVE THIS CROSSWORD!
Towering high above the ground, those broken windows cry in reproach in a voice so loud that every visitor’s enthusiasm in the beauties of the Park is immediately dampened, and the result invariably is a lessening in their high estimate of the Tenuika Domain. What should be done is to replace the broken panes, and place wire-netting down both sides of the windows, so as to give them ample protection. This was done with success at Oamaru, and can easily be done here. An estimate of the eo.st of the glass to repair both ends of the stand is £7 at the most i while the outside figures for the wire-netting we suggest are covered easily hy £5/5/-. Using expert labour under the No. 5 Scheme, we claim that this unsightly defect can he remedied at a total cost of £ 15/15/-.
The cost of top-dressing the drives in the Domain recently was £7 0-odd. Considering that the panes have been broken for a period of at least two years, we contend that their repair and future protection should have taken precedence over the asphalting. These repairs should be 'put into effect immediately, so as to have the Domain in perfect condition for the oncoming holiday season, when many visitors will be availing themselves of Temuka’s famous motor camp. If, however, the finances of the Domain Board are insufficient to meet this immediate necessity, much ’better would • it.- be that ALL the panes he removed, rather than have the present crossword puzzle effect glaring down at one as one enters the Park through the Memorial Gates.
