THE Temuka Leader SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1929. NEWS OF THE DAY.

Mr A. C. Palmer will hold his usual sale of poultry, pigs, furniture and sundries at The Rialto, Temuka, this afternoon, commencing at 1.30. Included in the sundries is a splendid Orion range (Shacklock), gents’ and ladies’ bicycles, also a boy’s bicycle.

The swimming carnival, so long looked forward to,, will be held on the evening of Monday, December 30, in the Temuka Domain baths. A splendid sports programme has been arranged, and the committee have spared no effort to make the function a success. The great feature, of course, will be the champion Australian swimmers, Ryan and Griffiths, who are making their only appearance in South Canterbury at Temuka. The event will be a notable one, and residents of Temuka should not fail to be present.

The weather at Geraldine and Temuka for the Christmas holidays was, on the whole, better than was anticipated. Christmas Eve was a gloomy day, but little rain fell till night. There was an absence of sun, and a heavy fall of rain in the night. Christmas Day broke fine, and a clear sky in the early morning presaged a fine day. There were short bursts of sun in the morning, but the day was cold and cheerless, though the rain kept off. Boxing Day proved a fine day, and manj r people went out into the country for picnics, and a good many small parties of campers took advantage of the opportunities offered by the domains and bush. Yesterday was oppressively hot in the morning, and .a few heat showers fell about mid-day, but the rain, soon cleared off and the afternoon was an ideal one, all the sports grounds being fully occupied. At Geraldine in the evening, a good many- people responded to the invitation of 'the W.E.A. camp authorities, and a pleasant time was spent in the big marquee. Mr J. Cullen, Waimauku, Auckland, has an advertisement in this issue, offering gorgeous dahlias, 10s 6d to 15s per dozen. Lost, on Thursday (probably in .vicinity of Temuka Baths), a pair of running shoes. Finder is requested to return to “Leader” Office. As evidence that the Railway staff are out to give prompt and efficient service, it is worth mentioning that one of the staff of this journal, returning from his holiday in tho north by the morning express, in a lit of absent-mindedness, foolishly left a brief bag and contents valued at some live or six pounds, on the train when he left it at Temuka. The train was a long one, well 10a,.... ed with holiday-makers. The local staff were immediately notified, and they communicated promptly with Timaru, and the bag, with contents untouched, was returned by 2.30 p.m.—within three hours.

Messrs .Joynt and Walker, barristers and solicitors, Timaru and Temuka, notify in this issue that thenoffices will re-open on Friday, 10th ■January.

At a sitting of the Soldiers’ Rehabilitation Commission at Wellington, Sir Andrew Russell, Dominion President of R.S.A., gave evidcnee in which he dealt with the many prolblems involved, expressing his views of the methods of relief and assistance, adopted in various countries, and offering some suggestions that 'might assist in solving the difficulties here.
