TEMUKA PICTURES. Joan Crawford plays the role made famous. by the great Sarah Bernhardt in "Dream of Love,” to be screened at Temuka to-night as a new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer feature. The screen presentation is an adaptation of “Adrienne Lecouvreur,” famous old French play that was used by Bernhardt as a starring vehicle for many seasons. Fred Niblo, in bringing this story to the screen, has presented many scenes of rare cinematic brilliance, and the love episodes between Asther and Miss Crawford are handled with a delicate warmth. In the film version the setting is laid in a mythical and picturesque Balkan kingdom. It tells of the love romance between - a wandering gipsy maid and the royal heir to the throne. They meet at a circus carnival, and after a night of love are parted by the inexorable law which says that a member of royalty cannot wed a commoner. How the status of each undergoes a change, how they rise to heights of dramatic passion and sacrifice, makes a play of unusual power and charm. Nils Asther appears opposite Joan Crawford in the brilliant film offering, and the elaborate supporting cast includes A Been Pringle,' Carmel Myers, Warner Gland, and many others of note. In the supporting pictures is a good Comedy by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. GERALDINE MUNICIPAL THEATRE. When you grip your chair in the theatre just as two trains meet in a head-on collision, does it ever occur to you that the speeding trains are nothing more or less than models? “Sinking ships” are usually photographed in the studio lake. But there are times when the movie men are unable to fool us, and it is then that they have to journey to what is generally known as a “location.” The story of “The Giant of the Mountain,” which will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night, is laid entirely in the high, picturesque, snow-clad alps of Southern Europe, and so the producing company was required to transport the whole company to the actua'l location, and film the picture there. On Monday night (Labour Day) a special holiday programme will be shown, the star feature being “Take Me Home.” There will be no pictures shown on Tuesday.
