THEFT OF MOTOR TYRES

YOUNG MAN CONVICTED. At the Temuka Police Court on Thursday, before Mr W. F. Evans, J.P., and Mr A. Lowrie, J.P., John Hall Clark was charged (1) with, on August 9, at Rangitata, he did steal one motor tyre, valued at £1 10s, the property of John Snell; and (2) on the same date and at the same place, he did steal olpe motor tyre, valued at 30s, one motor tube, valued at 10s, and one rim, valued at 15s, of a total value of £2 15s, the property of Albert James Priddle.

Sergeant Dwan prosecuted, and defendant pleaded guilty to both charges. The Sergeant stated that the complainants and the defendant had been attending a presentation and farewell social that was held at Rangitata. The cars were parked in a paddock adjoining the hall, and on the following morning the articles mentioned were discovered to be missing from the cars. On September 21, the complainant Snell had occasion to visit a farm where defendant was employed, and whilst there discovered the tyre which had been taken from his (SneH’s) car. Constable Southworth and he (Sergeant Dwan) took possession of the tyres and other articles, and arrested the defendant. Defendant had not been before the Court previously. The car he had possession of until quite recently was not registered. As far as the police knew, he had only done four days’ work in the last four weeks. He had no money.

Defendant was convicted and discharged with regard to the first formation, and convicted and fined £3 with respect to the second. He was also ordered to make restitution, 15s, value of the rim which had not been recovered. The goods in possession of the police were ordered to be returned to their owners. Default was fixed at 10 days’ imprisonment in Timaru gaol, and defendant was given until 5 p.m. that day to find the money.
