The Rev. J. N. Crowes has been appointed chairman of tho Conciliation Board, Mr Quick having resigned. The Southland News reports that a pest somewhat similar to the oyster scale is attacking the flax plant. It is about the same shape and size as the oyster scale, only white, instead of a brownish colour, and seems quite as prolific. Two blades of flax were shown us to-day, which were fairly smothered from the root half way up the blade. The scale evidently feeds on the juices, as both leaves were unusually dry, and the yellow colour intermixed with tho bright green showed that the life of tho plant was pretty well sapped awav.
