The Boer War
Wellington, Jan. 24. The Agent-General cables as follows : Nothing decisive yet, General Warren, with Generals Clery, Hart, Dundonald, Woodgate, and Hillyard, on our extreme left,'appear to be working iu eastward and north-easterly directions, so as to get the Boers’ right wing between fires.
General Hart captured an advanced post on Sunday, our loss being 90. General Warren, reinforced, has now five brigades. General Lyttelton, at Pofcgieter’s Drift, is stationary.
There have been about 110 deaths from disease at Ladysmith since January Ist.
THE THIRD CONTINGENT
There is some talk of forming another Kiflo Company in Wellington to bring the strength of the local Battalion up to eight companies. Captain Brandon has been recommended as Major of the Battalion. The commander of the forces has intimated that a battalion band may be formed. The Defence Department has decided to order the Horetaunga Mounted Rifles to exercise over the whole stretch of rough country from the Heads to Porinia._ For each parade the men will bo paid 2s Gd. A movement is on foot to soud nurses from Wellington to the war.
THE THIRD CONTINGENT TO LEAVE CHRISTCHURCH.
The Premier has definitely decided that Christchurch shall have the pleasure of saying farewell to ■ the third contingent. To this end instructions have been given to pass men aud horses at each centre instead of bringing them to Wellington. Northerners will be shipped to Christchurch as soon as they are ready, aud the whole contingent will take their departure from Lyttelton. The Premier has informed the Imperial authorities that they may expect 200 men. Just at present there is a little uncertainty as to whether the Undaunted can find accommodation for so many horses, but as she is a 1000-tou steamer it is hoped there will he ample accommodation. Air Seddou has also cabled to Australia to ascertain on what terms the Imperial Govarmuent is sending the troopship for the Bushmen. It is possible that an endeavour may bo made to get her to visit New Zealand and take, if not the men, at least the horses, which in some quarters private persons arc anxious to present to the Imperial authorities. According to the present intention, the contingent will leave Lyttelton not before the third week in February. , The marine parade on Saturday produced A3GS, which will cover expenses and leave ample margin for the Patriotic Fund. As this only represents 7,300 people; several thousands must have managed to got on board without tickets. Wanganui, Jan. 31, Out of 100 volunteers for Wanganui’s special contingent, 25 offered to find their own horses, and some to pay all expenses. Wanganui’s total contributions to the fund now exceeds A3OOO.
