Tho lion”' Kong correspondent of the Telegraph states Japan is very restless, and is keeping a. sharp watch on the movements of Russia. Japan is quite ready to invade Eastern Siberia and Manchuria, and will not put up wdth any undue encroachments in Corea. Japan will strike sharply and decisively, knowing that with her it will bo practically a life and death struggle. Lord Beauchamp visits New Zealand next month. Sydney, Jan. 20. Bishop Julius has arrived from a visit to the Islands. I Melbouhnb. Jan. 19. 1 Bash fires are again raging in the country. Many thousand acres of grass have been destroyed at Kilmore, and 1000 tons of firewood, and several houses have been burnt. January 20. The Postmaster-General has received a communication from Mr Chamberlain, indicating that the Pacific Cable scheme is being pushed on, with a new committee, who are taking evidence to see whether any vital alterations have taken place since the cable was recommended in LS9G, and are also considering the question of laying a duplicate line. Bet. 1 -iiane, Jan. 19. The Marine Board have exonerated the officers of the Queen Christina from blame for the disaster.
