S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Aid Board was held on Tuesday. Present —Messrs J. Jackson (chairman), W. M. Moore, A. Sherratt, G. H. Graham, and F. R. Gillingham. Mr Talbot apologised for non-attendance.

After receiving the chairman’s usual statement, a conversational discussion took place on the report on a number of patients who had been in the hospital for a much longer time than is allowed by by-law 53. —After hearing the report of Drs Lovegrove, Hogg, and Reid on the cases, it was decided to allow two or three of the worst cases to remain at the hospital for the time being. The chairman reported on the case of an old woman whose relations in Auckland had paid for her removal there, but who had got tired of her, and sent her back.—The board thought the case a peculiar one, and in the meantime will pay for her board at a private house in Timaru, pending a communication being made to the Auckland board on the case.

On the motion of Messrs Graham and Gillingham, it was resolved—“ That con - sideration of provision for invalid patients whom it is desirable to have moved from the hospital be adjourned to the next regular meeting, with a view of having the matter discussed by a fuller meeting ; members to receive notice that this business is coming forward.” The secretary and steward were instructed to go through several of the patients’ accounts, and see who should be pressed for payment. The hospital estimates for the ensuing year were submitted, and, after consideration, were, on the motion of Messrs Moore and Gillingham, adopted. The estimates provide for the usual routine—food, medicines, etc.— nhe only permanent improvement being “ shelter shed and Queen-street fence, £130.” Both these items had previously been before the board, and will be carried out shortly.

The medical staff asked the board to instruct them as to procedure in cases where a parent or relation forbids an operation being performed on a patient when they (the staff) think such an operation necessary. It was said that this matter had come prominently before the medical staff’ lately.—The secretary was instructed to write to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin Hospital Boards to ascertain what is the procedure at the hospitals in those cities, and the board hope to have the replies in time for next meetiug, the question being a rather important one.

Charitable-aid oases were then dealt with, and, the estimates for the year tabled. These show the satisfactory decrease of £4OO compared with last year. The board’s funds were shown to be £lO7l in credit, but this is to carry on till July. Accounts amounting to £373 0s lOd were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
