The National Mortgage and Agency Go. in conjunction with Messrs H. B. Webster and Co„ report having held their second wool sales on the 17th inst. A catalogue of about 330 bales was submitted, and very few lots were passed in. The attendance of buyers was very fair, and prices were on a par with the first sale. The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Limited (J. Mundell, auctioneer), report having held their second wool sale of the season on the 17th inst. The attendance of buyers was good. Competition was keen, but at a reduction in prices of about |d on fine crossbred and id on merino. CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES. Seven thousand bales of wool were catalogued at Christchurch for Friday’s sales and were nearly all disposed of, buyers being eager to secure all classes. Fine half-breds sold at from 7jd to 9d, dingy sorts 6id to 7sd, some extra fine light wool from the Eaatoot estate 9£d, crossbreds from 6d to B|d. There was a much better demand for merinos, which realised from to 7£d, and in one case the Burnt Hill brought Bd. A keen competition existed between the local buyers for locks and pieces which advanced slightly in value. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Jan. 19. Competition at the wool sales was lively, and the advance was well maintained, though the quality of the wool offered was below the average. 28,000 bales were offered, and 25,000 have been sold up to date. Prices current are—Greasy fleece, good, 7fd to Bfd; superior, 9d to lid; lambs, good, Cjd to 7jd ; sxiperior, 8d to 9Jd; crossbred, good, 8d to B£d ; superior, 9d to Ofd ; scoured fleece, good, 13£d to 14|d; superior, 15d to 17£d; washed fleece, good, lOd to lOfd; superior, lid to 12jd. Melbourne, Jan. 18. Wheat is in fair demand at 3s 2d. Flour, stone-made, £7 10s to £7 15s; roller-made, £7 to £8 10s. Oats, Algerian, Is 6|d to Is 7d; stout, 2s 2£d. A return of insolvencies, compositions, and liquidations last year shows that the liabilities aggregated £1,817,000, and the assets £3,957,000. Adelaide, Jan. 18. Wheat, fair average, 3s 3d. Flour, roller-made, £8 15s. Oats, 3s 3d to 3s 4d. Barley, malting, 3s Gd to 4s 3d, scarce. Bran and pollard Bd, trade restricted. Brisbane, Jan. 21. At a very stormy meeting of the Queensland Meat Export Company the chairman stated that but for an advance by the Government of £12,000 the Company would have had to go into liquidation. The company decided to issue 60,000 preferential shares. The associated banks have reduced deposit rates of interest by \ per cent. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL, London, January IS. The Oamaru bond-holders have approved of the consolidation of the loans into one bearing interest at 5 per cent. The New Zealand and River Plate Land Mortgage Company have decided to,

limit advances on properties in New Zealand to 50 per cent, of their value, as they have been assured that it is unwise to lend more than that. The Times, commenting on the company’s decision, says that they have taken a prudent course owing to the foolish proposals of the New Zealand Parliament towards capitalists.

The chairman of the New Zealand and River Plate Company, said that the assets were equal to four times the amount of the debentures issued, but it was important to pay up calls and minimise the liability. The influx of population was enhancing the value of property, and mortgagors were demanding proportionately larger advances. Forced sales would ruin the value of shares. Sir W, T. Power and Mr W. K. Graham were re-elected directors.

January 19. The New Zealand Trust and Loan Company has declared an interim dividend of 9 per cent.

A Queensland 3£ per cent, loan of £1,200,000 will be issued in a day or two at a minimum of 88, It i« reported that the loan will be subscribed by a syndicate at 1 per cent, premium. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 105; 3i per cent, ditto, 96. New Zealand long-berried wheat, ex warehouse, is firm at 32s 6d. Quotations for frozen mutton are not changed. Beef, fore-quarters 2fd per lb, hind-quarters 3f d per lb. Heavy arrivals of American beef have depressed the market.

The hemp market is firm, but prices remain unaltered. At auction 5500 bales of New Zealand were bought in. South Australian wheat, ex warehouse, is firmer at 345.

Victorian, ex warehouse, is firm at 33s 6d. An Australian wheat cargo of 6000 quarters of January-February shipment, has been sold at 32s 6d. Parcels are offering at 31s 3d. The Bradford wool market is quiet, with a downward tendency, in anticipation of the opening of the London series. Jan. 21. The butter market is demoralised. The weather is propitious, and Continental supplies are short. The best factorymade article shows a decline of 5s per cwt., and secondary quality 30s. Buyers are awaiting the offering of heavy arrivals of Victorian. Dairy-made is selling at 95s to 100 s per [cwt.; factory-made, from 106 s to 112 s ; Sydney factory-made, from 96s to 104 s. The choicest quality realised 110 s.

Two cargos of Australian wheat, January and February shipment, sold at 32s 6d and 32s 9d respectively. Two parcels realised 31s 3d and 31s 4£d. The Times says that the colonial promises of retrenchment inspire polite scepticism, and are sometimes even associated with designs for new loans. Before colonial stocks of likely to recover the mischievous system of attracting men from the country into the towns much be checked.

Importers of frozen meat advise that the freezing companies should allow the animal heat to escape prior to freezing, and complain that owing to this not being done many quarters of beef have arrived in a putrid state in the thickest parts. The Bank of New Zealand has declared a dividend of 5 per cent. Kome, Jan. 20.

The Banca Romana has issued notes to the extent of 60,000,000 lire (£2,400,000) more than it was authorised to do. The Banca National liquidates the Banca Romana.

Dunedin, Jan. 21

The Westport Coal Company’s report shows a profit for the year of £22,043 ; to which is to be added £6358 brought forward. An interim dividend of 3| per cent, for the half yeai ended June 30th was declared, and a similar dividend for the latter half of 1392 was recommended, and in addition a bonus of Is per share.
