SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL.

Ths children attending this school assembled on Thursday, the 19fh instant, to enjoy the annual treat. Accompanying them were numbers of their parents and friends. Altogether it was the largest gathering of the kind ever held at the township. The School Committee, with their chairman, Mr J. J. Ellis, were at great pains to render the affair a success. After a substantial lunch the children engaged in racing, leaping, and such games as they can enter into with enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoy. Toys were competed for by the younger children, and money prizes by the older boys and girls. The chief events were: —looyds race for junior boys: J. Bracefield 1, P, Brophy 2, T. Brophy 3. 100yds race for senior boys : J. Canavan 1, C. Gimson 2,C, Wilks 3. Junior girls race : M. Bates 1, E. Coles 2, M. Bell 3. Senior girls race ; Sarah Grirnsey 1, A. Bracefield 2, H. Cripps 3. Hop, step, and leap : J. Canavan 1, C. Girason 2. Girls three-legged race: A, Bracefield and M, Bates 1, M. Bell and B. Bates 2. Boys’ three-legged race : J, Canavan and C. Gimson 1, E. O’Connor and J. McKay 2. After tea the children assembled in the schoolroom, and the prizes were presented by the Chairman of Committee. These were awarded in accordance with the results of the Inspector’s examination recently held. The books were purchased from one of of the leading firms and made quite an attractive appearance. Suitable picture books were presented to the infants classes. In the absence of Miss Balfoxxr, the decision with regard to proficiency in sewing was postponed. In the evening thpre was a dance under the direction of Mr J. Bracefield, who acted as master of ceremonies.
