FANCY DRESS BALL.

A very successful fancy dress ball, under the auspices of the Geraldine Rifle Volunteer Corps, was held in the drill shed on Thursday evening, about sixty couples being present. The hall decorations were unique, and with the large number of fancy costumes of the dancers, made a brilliant sight. Green shrubs and bunting were placed round the walla, and the ceiling was hung with fancy Chinese lanterns and pretty paper decorations. The stage was nicely set out as a drawingroom. With regard to the fancy dresses, it would be hard to discriminate as to the best amongst them—they were all so well got up. Mrs Dr Craig, as the “ Duchess of Devonshire,” wore a splendid and becoming costume, and Mrs Empson, as “Pondre,” came next. The Misses Fish looked very nice in pretty Japanese costumes, and the Misses Preston, as “ Summer ” and “ Winter,” were charmingly dressed, and well worthy of special mention. Of the gentlemen, Messrs Besleyand A. R. Hardy are deserving of special notice. The former, as a courtier of George 111. time, wore a very beautiful and expensive dress, and so also did the latter as “ Lord Dudley.” Mr J. W. Pyo was well dressed as “Paul Pry,” and Mr Orbell, jun., appeared in a splendid representation of “ Robinson Crusoe,” dressed in skins and with a parrot on his shoulder. Miss 0, Lovegrove, as “Miss Mephistopheles,” wore a very handsome costume.
