S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (chairman), Gray, Jackson, Storey, Talbot, Rhodes, Howell, and the Rev. Mr White. An apology was read from Mr R. H. Pearpoint. chairman’s statement. The chairman stated that since last meeting he had received the resignation of Mr J. H. Gray, master at Fairfield, which had been accepted. At Ash wick Flat a new school had been opened, and at RedolifF the school had been re-opened. architect’s report. The architect, Mr West, reported that the buildings at Ashwick Flat had been completed in a very satisfactory manner, and that the additions to the master’s house at Geraldine had also been finished. The repairs to the master’s residence at St. Andrew’s would be proceeded with at once. TENDERS. Tenders fox* additions at SeadoWn were opened as follows :—Comer & Larcombe, £182; T. Foden, £17!) 13s; J. Broadhead, £IOB 15s Gd ; B. R. Tooth, £lB2 ; J. Delaney, £IBO 5s ; D. McKay, £l7B 10s; D. M. Clark, £l6B 10s; Clinch & Lloyd, £240. Tho tender of D. M. Clark was accepted. THE SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION. The inspector reported that the scholarship examination was now being held. There were 27 candidates (16 boys and 11 girls) for the junior, and 10 candidates (0 boys and 4 girls) for the senior. The examination will be concluded by Saturday. STANDARD EXAMINATIONS. The inspector reported tjpit all tho standard examinations ' in ’ the ‘ pubiiq Bchools were finished by December 30th, and that the schedules had been posted to tbe teachers. The remaining reports would be presented to the board at its next meeting. BUILDINCS. The Tftuilding Committee reported that they had not yet been able to recommend anything. . ' ■ - ■

SCOTSBURN. In reference to a letter from Scotsburn, Mr Talbot moved, Mr Jackson seconded, and it was agreed to —“ That the Education Department be informed that the master’s house at Scotsburn had been destroyed by fire, and that a request be preferred for its replacement; also that the department be informed that the cost of replacement will be partially covered by an insurance of £2OO, which the board have applied for payment of.” TEMUKA. The recommendations from the Temuka District High Schoool Committee, that Mr Smyth, 8.A., be, appointed head master, and Mr Low, second master, were approved of by the board, on the motion of Mr Storey seconded by Mr Talbot. SUTHERLANDS. In respect to Sutherlands school a letter from the chairman of committee and other correspondence is to be forwarded to the headmaster for his information and reply. WAITOHI. The committee at Waitohi Flat Upper School asked that their buildings bo painted to prevent decay.—The matter was deferred. Matters connected with Studholme Junction, Hakateramea, and Adair were dealt with, and the meeting terminated.
