COURSING.
On Saturday, at the invitation of the Hon. L. Walker, a good day's sport was held by a number of coursing-men ou the Four Peaks estate, The day was fine, and everyone enjoyed the outing. The ground was rather heavy, and the hares, which were plentiful, ran strongly, hut during the d»y eleven were killed. The paddocks of the Four Peaks estate are among the beat in South Canterbury for coursing upon, and on such ground, with good dogs and strong hares, it is needless to say the sport was good. Mr Walker hospitably provided a capital luncheon, which was veiy acceptable to the sportsmen, whose appetites had been rendered keen by the drive up from Temuka and Geraldine in the bracing morning air. Mr Walker has also generously promised another day's courting 1 at a future date during the season. Dr Hayes, of Temuka, officiated as judge, and Mr M. Connolly,
of Geraldine, as slipper: and as thej were not novices at their work, they gave every satisfaction. The following are the details of the running : All-Aged Stakes. First Round. Connolly's w and f b Queen, Mr M. Connolly's br d Darebiu beat Mr W. Deßenzy's blk b Darkie. Second Round. Forest King beat Tudor, Darebin beat Gambler. Third Round. Mr W. H. Ryan's rd d Forest King, by Happy go-Lucky—Nelly, and Mr M. Connolly's br d Darebin, by Belisarius— Lady Brandon, after running an undecided' course agreed to divide. Consolation Stakes. First Round. Mr M. Connolly's w and fn b Queen beat Dr Hayes' w and b d Tudor. MrW. Deßenzy's blk d Darkie beat Mr J. Cunningham's (n.s.) blk b Forest Queen. Mr J. Cunningham's (n.s.) w and br b Patience ran a bye. Second Round. Queen beat Patience. Darkie ran a bye. Third Round. Mr M. Connolly's w and br b Queen, by First King—Black-eyed Susan, and Mr W. Deßenzy's blk b Darkie, by Argyle— Lady Brandon, divided the stake.
