At a parade of the City Guards Wellington, last Thursday night, Corporal Barry was brought up ciiarged with firing his rifle out of a railway carriage, whilst returning from the review on 25th May. He was admonished and reduced to the ranks, being debarred from holding a non-commissioned officership for 12 months. Corporal O’Neill, for a similar offence, did not appear, and in consequence lias been recommended to be dismissed from the Volunteer force.

At the Wellington Harbor Board the Finance Committee recommended that a loan of £55,000 at 4£ per cent should b* raised. A resolution was also carried that the Finance Committee be requested to report upon the feasibility of providing funds for the construction of the graving dock at Wellington. At 5.45 a.m. yesterday a stable and shed belonging to David Wotton, carrier at Wolston, near Christchurch, was burned down. It was insured in the Standard office for £lO5. The cause is not known. John Gordon has been killed by a fulling tree at Mangawai, Auckland. Some of the jewellery found on the ezinglar Dunn at Auckland has bean identified as part of a robbery committed in February last, The tender of Messrs Campbell and Co., of Dunedin, has been accepted for the supply of creosoted sleepers. The number to be supplied is 150,000, and the contract price isL £29,900, The police/are searching for the missing and J. S, Harris, who went out shooting game on the WairarapaLake. Nothing has been heard of them since the 25th ult. It is fea r ed they may have been drowned in crossing the lake. •

Herbert Allendale, who confessed to the recent extensive jewellery robbery at Wellington, has been commuted for trial. A public meeting was held on Vodnesday night at Christchurch under the chairmanship of Mr Wynn Williams which passed resolutions in favor of the Government taking measures to facilitate the settlement of working men on the lands and introducing cheap money in accordance with Sir Julius Vogel’s scheme.

Mr Hiscoke, of Christchurch, who made a gallant attempt to save the life of the unfortunate boy Treblecock, when the latter was drowned at Sumner, has received a letter from the Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, stating that the Society’s certificate has been awarded to him.

At a property sale in Christchurch on Thursday, Mr O. Clark sold a freehold corner section, with 165 feet frontage on Colombo street, having a row of wooden shops thereon for £3750. A similar section with 100 and 120 feet frontage was sold for £2950. A store in Manchester street sold for £llOO, and a block of acres with a dwelling-house at Opawa, about two miles from Christchurch, fetched £2OOO.
