S.C. Refbigebatik© Compakt. A special general meeting of the shareholders in this Company took place in Timaru on Thursday last, there being a lvge attendance. The meeting was called in accordance with the prayer of a requisition signed by a number of the shareholders, to consider the advisability or otherwise of proceeding with the works, great changes having recently occurred in the frozen meat trade at Home and elsewhere. Mr T. Teschemaker at the conclusion of a rather long speech, moved—- " That until a sufficient number of sheep are guaranteed to warrant the Company in chartering a direct steamer to England, further operations be suspended." Mr T. Hall briefly seconded the motion. Messrs M. Jonas, B. Woollcooibe, F. LeCren, W. Moody, W. Gould,] E. Acton, and others spoke in favour of proceeding with the works, and on a show of hands being taken the motion was declared lost. A poll was then demanded, which resulted as follows : —For the resolution, 248 votes ; against it, 288 ; majority in favour of proceeding with the works, 4.0.

Personal.— We learn from a letter received by the last mail that Mr 0. G\ Tripp may be expected to reach New Zealand in the Doric, about the 10th of October. Young Men's Club.—As an outcome of certain correspondence that has appeared in this journal we notice that a meeting of persons favourable to the instituting of a Young Men's Club is announced to be held in the Good Templar Hall, Geraldine, on Wednesday evening next, at 7.30. p.m. Thk Weathee. —Since our last issue the weather has continued very rough, stormy and wintry. In Geraldine, on Tuesday night there was a heavy fall of snow accompanied by frequent vivid flashes of lightning, and occasional peals of thunder, one which lasted for a considerable timo was especially noticeable. Rain cantinued to descend in one continuous downpour throughout Thursday, and until Friday morning, when the weathei gradually cleared off. In the evening it commenoed to rain again, and continued till the time of our g»ing to press. Saltation Abut Tia Mbbtiwo.—On Thursday next those carrying on the work of the Salvation Army in Temuka celebrate their formation into a corps and the presentation of colors by Major Pollard (assisted by Staff-Captain Barritt, A.D.C., from London) with a tea meeting in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, tea being on the table from 5.30 till 7.30 p.m. The tea will be followed by a great " hallelujah meeting." Thb Geeakdinb Eace». —Thursday and yesterday were the days appointed by the Gteraldina Eacing Club for the holding of their Spring meeting, but "the best laid schemes of men and mice gang oft aglee." Thursday was one of the most wretched days that could possibly have been—a cold, biting wind driving the rain right through one, metaphorically speaking. During the early part of that morning the Committee of the Club decided to put the raees off till the following day, but owing to the persistent continuance of the rain it was deemed advisable to postpone them till Thersday and Friday next. A; great many people arrived in G-eraldine from various parts on Thursday and owing to the inclement weather the hotils drove a somewhat thriving trade. Toward evening, however, the township assumed its usual quietude. An announcement in reference to the postponement of the races appears in our advertising columns.
