MEREMERE HALL OPENED

ACTIVITY OF THE RESIDENTS, A large crowd of visitors and residents gathered for the opening of ' the Meremere hall. 'The evening took the form of a euchre tourney and dance. Prizes for euchre were won by Miss Reynolds and Mr. J. Davison. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. and Mrs. G. Foreman. In declaring the hall open Mr. G. W. Williams thanked those who had assisted in the construction of the building and mentioned the splendid way the people had responded in supplying funds and labour. Messrs. G. Wallace and A. Allan spoke of the improvements which had taken place in the district since they first settled there 40 to 50 years ago. Mr. John Kerrisk, Ohangai, congratulated the Meremere people on having a hall in the district and assured them that the Ohangai people would assist in supporting the gatherings. Dancing was held to music by Messrs S. Geary, W. Murray and J. Bloor. Messrs. A. Williams and M. Murray were masters of ceremonies. , Members of the Meremere Cricket Club met at Mr. J. Bloor’s residence to farewell Mr. L? Symes, who is to leave the district. Mr. ’W. J. Geary, captain, in presenting Mr. Symes with a gift, spoke of the ready help always given by Mr. Symes, and wished him future happiness./ PERSONAL ITEMS. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Messrs. J. R. Corrigan and George Ford, and recognition of their services to the movement were expressed by the executive of the South Taranaki Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs on Saturday. Mr. L. V. Julian, of the Eltham Dairy Company, has been appointed manager of the Whakamara Dairy Company's factory in succession to Mr. H. le Fleming. SUCCESSFUL BALL. PLUNKET EFFORT AT PATEA. The Patea Plunket Society’s gipsy ball, held on Friday in the town hall, was an outstanding success, the floor being crowded to capacity with dancers representative of a wide territory. Many of those present were in Gipsy costume, the bright colours adding a note of gaiety to the ball. Hooker’s orchestra j played a generous programme of popular dance numbers. The hall was "transformed with a lavish profusion of streamers, coloured lights and greenery. The supper arrangements were excellently executed, an energetic committee handling the successive sittings with precision and despatch.' The funds of the branch will benefit substantially as the result of the ball.
