FALSE PRETENCES

CONVICTION OF FARM LABOURER.

SECOND-HAND CAR THE TROUBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. Five charges of obtaining money by false pretences were preferred against Ronald Beverly Shaw, aged 21, a farm labourer living at Tuatapere, in the Police Court to-day. Shaw, who was described in the charge sheet as a native of Melbourne, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months’ hard labour on each of two charges and on the others he was convicted and discharged. In the two cases the informations disclosed that he obtained £lB and £9 by stating that he had been fined £B5 for sly grog selling and wanted money to help to pay the fine. In another he falsely represented that he had bought a bush section at Otapiri and obtained £5 from his employer, a Clifden farmer, from whom he also obtained a further £5 by falsely stating that he fyad damaged his uncle’s car and had to pay that amount for repairs. The charge upon wh :h he originally appeared was one of obtaining £2 5s from his employer by falsely representing that he was taking action against an Invercargill firm. Detective-Sergeant R. Thompson, who prosecuted, said that on May 14 Shaw came to Invercargill and bought a sec-ond-hand car from a dealer, paying £2O deposit and representing himself as a contractor with several men working for him. The car was obviously the cause of all the trouble as Shaw was a good worker.
