HEAVY WEEK REPORTED CLEARING AND PADDOCK SALES. ; DEMAND . FOR YOUNG COWS. • The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society in its weekly-review .of’the stock markets states that an exceptionally heavy week of trading in the yards, clearing sales and paddock, has been experienced. ' ‘ A feature of the. week has been the keen demand shown for young cows, July and August calvers, which have met keen competition at all clearing -sales, and for early two and three-year heifers, as was shown at Waverley last Monday, where one of the finest offerings of dairy heifers to ; come under the hammer for many a year met a ready sale at up to £lO ss, with other really “top” heifers selling at from £6 to £8 10s. Butter has continued its steady upward trend, and to-day’s figures of 88s per . cwt. is the highest reached for a very long time. It appears that “payouts” generally will average -slightly higher than last year. Cheese, in sympathy with butter, has improved slightly. - Values of all classes of fat stock remain much on- a par with those ruling m last week, with if anything a Slight easing noticed in fat ewes and a slight hardening in fat cattle. Since last week the firm has been successful in disposing of several trucks of fat ewes at from 17s to 18s, with fat wethers at from 23s to 24s 6d. Values of fat cattle remain very .firm,. with the outlook .for the future distinctly bright. Best prime fat heifers have changed hands at from £6 to £6 10s and best prime fat cows £5 10s to £5 15s. , . Little movement can be reported in values of store sheep since last • week. A keen inquiry exists for ewes in lamb to Southdown rams, as was. shown ■ at Waverley on Friday last, week, when keen competition ruled. Ewe and wether hoggets have.qltered little in value, with quotations limited. Values of all classes of store station cattle remain on a par with those ruling in last week, with quotations 'limited. A very keen inquiry has existed during the week for good two and 3-year dairy heifers apart from that ruling at the firm’s series of heifer fairs held throughout the district. Sales during the week include 39 3-year dairy heifers at £4, 39 2-year heifers at £4 2s 6d and odd trucks all going out of the district, together with sales of truck lots of cattle for local clients at £4 10s to £5 15s. This week has seen a keen, demand shown, for good calves, an outside buyer accounting for a line of 100 “top” cattle at from £2 2s to £2 ss. Other sales include 30 at 355. as well as odd lines at from 25s to £2 5s according to quality and size. n Sales at all centres have been well supported with satisfactory sales resulting. At the Stratford sale there was only a moderate yarding of store cattle, together with a incderafe yarding in the sheep section. In the latter section some particularly forward lambs were offered, but these. were'not sought-after to any extent .and: everything was passed. In the store cattle section only moderate cattle came forward and these were disposed of at late rates. On Monday the society held, a very successful clearing sale on. account of Mr. J. Johnson, Upper Duthie Road. The herd of 30 dairy cows cbiriprised mostly young Jersey and Jersey-cross di4 e in August, and they came. forward -in splendid condition, Tfeere’-ivas a good , attendance of local arid visiting dairy farmers, keeh-.'fvompetitidn - resulting in satisfactory prices.. Young Jersey-cross cows made up to £B,’ others • and £6 15s. Cow.s carrying about their 4th and. sth calves sold at from' £4. 5s to £5 ss, well grown good quality dairy heifers selling at £6 5s and £5 10s and others a little small £3 15s. - ■ At the clearing sale on account of Mr. O. Booten approximately 50 dairy cows and 13 2-year. xri-calf Jersey heifers,: as well as seven yearling Jersey heifers, were submitted for auction. ■ The herd came forward in excellent condition and met with a ready sale, July calvers averaged £4, £4 10s, £5 ss, ;£6 6s to £7. August calvers £4 10s, £5, £5 10s, £6 5s to £7, September calvers. and later £3 to £4 10s, dairy heifers £4, £5 to £5 10s, bulls to £4 4s, yearling heifers 355. aged gelding £l2 10s, aged mare £lB 10s. Implements in. good condition met with a ready sale. Approximately 62 dairy cows on account of Mr. R. E. Old were submitted for auction at the Manaia yards on June 14 and met with a ready sale. Dairy cows (July calvers) made £4 10s, £5 to £5 ss, £6 10s to £6 15s, August calvers £4, £4 10s, £5 to £6, September and late to £3 15s. At a clearing sale held on account of Mr. Gregor McGregor at the "Waverley yards on June 14, 50 dairy cows were submitted for auction and came forward in good condition. Competition was fairly keen and the whole herd was disposed of at the average price of £4 15s y Unfortunately *- no calving dates were available and buyers- had to - use their own judgment., ’Realisations were £4 10s„ £4' 15s, £5, £5 5s to £5 IQs, At a clearing sale on account of Messrs,- Chattertdh, Sheehan and Wills held at Opaku on' Tuesday 30 dairy cows :were submitted, .as, well- ,as 10 dairy heifers and a few horses. A clearing sale was. held on account of. Mr. Geo, Lord at Alton on Wednesday. The cows came forward in excellent condition,' and being good, deep-bodied, typey : sorts, they met a ready sale from a small but keen bench ■oi buyers, the herd of. 30 averaging £6 Is. The top price of the sale was £l5 5s Early. TOP PRICE OF £ll 5s PAID. I , ' ‘ SUCCESSFUL. SALE HELD. A very successful sale was conducted yesterday afternoon by Messrs. .Newton King Ltd., on. behalf of Mr. D. O’Sullivan, Norfolk Road, Inglewood. A large number of buyers was present from. Urenui in ■ the north to Hawera in ,the south. Both livestock and .implements : were displayed by Mr. O’Sullivan in first-class order and bidding was keen right throughout the sale. The herd comprised 22 cows and, with the exception of one or two, were all the vendor’s breeding and had averaged 330 to 3341 b fat, factory returns, during the past four years. Four of the cows had already calved,, and these realised. £9 to £lO ss, while the top price for the herd was £ll 5s for cows due to come into profit on July 20. The average realisation for the whole herd was £8 per head. Four in-Calf heifers were, submitted,, three realising £6 5s and the other £7 10s. Four/rising yearling heifers' were knocked down after keen competition, at £3 per head. The' rising two-year-old pedigree Jersey bull Maori Dapper reached 16 guineas. The eight-year-old spring dart gelding was sold for £5O. Breeding sows made £5 and £6. The sundries sold under good competition and realised values satisfactory to the vendor, while principal realisations for implements were: EVona manure distributor £2O 10s, spring dray £2l, mower £l5 10s, Burke haysweep £5.
