DID HE “BEAT GUN”?

BAINBRIDGE’S 220 YARDS RECORD. PROTEST AT ITS RECOGNITION. By Telegraph—Press 'Association. Christchurch, Last Night; “Our confidence in the members of the New Zealand council is further shaken by their remarkable action in passing through the performance as a New Zealand record, and I think the writing is on the wall for them,” said Mr. J. K. Moloney, president of the Canterbuiy Athletic Centre, at a meeting to-night. Mr. Moloney’s remarks were made in support of a protest against the crediting of a New Zealand record to W. S. Bainbridge, Auckland, for his run in the 220 yards at the New Zealand championships at Wanganui. Bainbridge was credited, with 21 3-5 s in the race, which he won narrowly, and it was alleged by members of the centre that Bainbridge undoubtedly beat the gun. They alleged that the officials were wrong in allowing certificates for this time to go forward, and contended that New Zealand records as the foundation of the sport must be jealously guarded. A motion was carried unanimously that the centre should write to the New Zealand council protesting strongly against the passing of the performance as a reCord and asking that steps be taken to rescind the council’s motion of recognition.
