An ampitheatre almost surrounded by bush-clad hills but flanked on one side by a gentle slope that provided an ideal grandstand and on another side by the Waitara River, Provided a pleasant location. The committee in framing the programme wisely kept the picnic aspect to the fore, and competitors, whether in the horse, axemen’s or miscellaneous events _ entered fully into the spirit of the occasion, and spnrred on by the encouragement of their supporters were out to do their best irrespective of the value of the prizes, which in many of the events were trophies. . The three chopping events drew large entries and evoked keen_ competition. The blocks used were pinus insignis.
