TRAINING OF PILOTS

NEW PLYMOUTH EASTER CAMP. LIST OF SUBJECTS FOR LECTURES. An extensive syllabus of lectures for the choice of those attending the Easter camp of aero clubs pilots at th§ Bell Block Airport has been received by Mr. S. E. Nielson, secretary of the New Plymouth Aero Club, from Wing Commander T. M. Wilkes, Controller of Civil Aviation. Lectures will be given under the headings of ■ air navigation, airmanship and elementary meteorology. Flightlieutenant Somerset-Thomas,' Sockburn, will lecture on air navigation and elementary meteorology and SquadronLeader L. M. Isitt will deal with airmanship. In a covering letter Wing-Commander Wilkes pointed out that in giving assistance to the club by lending camp equipment and by making the services of its officers available, the department stipulated that the syllabus should be of such a nature that all those- attending the camp would improve their aeronautical knowledge. At least two lectures a day should be given, each lecture to be from 45 minutes to an hour in duration. Suitable subjects suggested were:— Air navigation: Map reading, magnetic compass, triangle of velocities, course, and distance calculator and its uses, and air navigation log. Airmanship: Forced landing and procedure after forced landing, standard drill for swinging airscrews, inspection and maintenance of aircraft, and rules of the air. Elementary meteorology: The Beaufort Scale synoptic weather chart, variation of wind with height, vertical currents, and line squalls.
