HIGH SCHOOL WORK

PROCEEDING SATISFACTORILY. BOARD OF MANAGERS MEETING. The attendance at the Stratford Technical High School during the past month was good and work proceeded satisfactorily, reported the principal, Mr. A. H. R. Amess, to the monthly meeting last night of the board of managers. The baths were closed during the third week in March, Mr. Amess said, and athletic events occupied the sports timetable for the remainder of the time. The school sports were held on Thursday, when the parents of the pupils visited the school. The report received from the Public Works Department regarding the roof showed that the expenditure on repairs would be greater than was anticipated. Mr. Amess stated that following power given by a previous meeting he and another member of the staff, Mr. H. C. Johnson, had purchased a Tamworth boar for £8 8s as part of the plan to include pig husbandry in the agricultural course. They were unable to get a sow conforming to requirements and had left that purchase in abeyance. Authority was given for the purchase of seats for use in the open and £lO was given to the school sports fund. Those present were: Messrs. J. McAllister (chairman), T. T. Murray, N. B. Fletcher, F. Gawith and Mrs. L. Gibson. ELTHAM GARDEN PARTY. AID FOR ARMY BOYS’ HOME. A garden party to aid the funds of the Eltham Salvation Army Boys’ Home was held at the residence of Mr. H. G. Carman, Eltham, yesterday afternoon. It was arranged jointly by members of the Women’s Institute and Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The Mayor, Mr. I. J. Bridger, opened the proceedings in the absence of Colonel Osborne, who was unable to be present, and items were given by the boys’ band. Afternoon tea was' served under the supervision of Mrs. R. Darling, and stalls and competitions were in charge of Mesdames T. Fountaine, W. Smith, G. Foreman, H. Ogle, A. Lethbridge, B. H. Goldsmith, A. J. McPherson, E. Carter, J. Cocker, Oliver, J. D. McKay, O. Manley, Burgess, I. J. Bridger, E. Clare and Miss I. Peters. BASKETBALL AT TUNA. NEW COURT NEARLY COMPLETED. The formation of a sand basketball court on the school grounds at Tuna, was decided on at a meeting of the Tuna Basketball Club recently, and permission was sought and soon afterwards granted. The work is well on the way to completion, the club having secured the willing assistance of the men of the district. The club will enter a team in the junior competition this year, the colours chosen and accepted by the Taranaki Basketball Association being green and black. Personal.

Mr. and Mrs. Wright have returned to their home at Christchurch. Mr. L. Harrison is confined to his bed for a few days through an injury. Mrs. Wellington has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs. G. Lawrence, Bird Road.
