CARNIVAL SUCCESS

STRATFORD ATHLETIC CLUB. ALLOCATION OF CUPS DONATED. Satisfaction with the financial aspect of the electric light’ carnival held recently by the Stratford Amateur Athletic, and Cycle Club was expressed by members of the club committee at a meeting last night. There were present Messrs. L. J. Furrie (chairman), F. Bowler, R. R. Tyrer, S. A. Lay, A. Adams, S. K. Calcott (assistant secretary) and D. A. Benjamin (honorary secretary). A rough balance-sheet was prepared by the secretary and showed an approximate profit of £25. The dance account also showed a profit of about £5.. Five cups had been donated, it was reported. These were allocated as follows: W. J. Polson’s cup, women’s events; Stratford hotelkeepers’ cup, cyclists’ points; D. Butcher’s cup, distance events (880 yards and over); J. Petrie’s cup, field events; W. Mills’ cup, sprint events (up to 440 yards). The cups would be awarded for handicap events at the Stratford and Eltham meetings during the season, it was stated. The possibility of providing road cycling events in winter for the club’s cyclists was brought before the committee by Mr. Benjamin. It was decided, to help the cyclists in every way to hold events on Thursday afternoons, and a sub-committee comprising Messrs. Benjamin, Lay, Adams and Wynyard was appointed to assist the cyclists to make arrangements.

Appreciation of the assistance given and enthusiasm shown by the committee was expressed by the chairman. He was pleased at the way things had gone, during the year, he said, and the committee might well feel satisfied at the results of its first electric light meeting. The club had built itself up into one of the best clubs in Taranaki, and it had every chance of'holding that position. Mr. Furfie thanked the officers. There had been splendid team work, he said. Reference to the support accorded by the other clubs of Taranaki during the season was made. It was left to Messrs. Lay and Benjamin to arrange an evening for the presentation of club trophies. Mr. Bowler’s donation of a set of discs for the lap was referred' to. Mr. Furrie was thanked for his leadership during , the season, and Messrs. G. Smart and C. McL. Young were thanked for donations to the club. GENERAL ITEMS. Grant to High School. The estimated cost of £2OO for replacing windows at the Stratford Technical High School will be met to the extent of £133 6s 8d by a Government grant, advice of which was received from the Hon. S. G. Smith at the meeting of the Board of Managers last night. Books Given to School. Under the will of Mr. H. E. Trimble, who was chairman of the Board of Managers of the Stratford High School for 12 years prior to his death a few months ago, a large number of books has been donated to the school library and about 200 have already been added. The great bulk of the books in the library were given by Mr. Trimble, and such was their value that a special building was erected to accommodate them. The bequest adds to a graceful gesture that had already provided the school with an outstanding literary collection. The principal of the school, Mr. A. H. R. Amess, told the Board of Managers last night that eventually all the walls of the library building would be lined with books. * . King’s Jubilee.

A holiday will be granted school children on May 6 in accordance with the wish of the King, whose silver jubilee occurs on that date and following a request of the Government that something be done to mark the day in the minds of school pupils, the Board of Managers of the S.T.H.S. appointed a sub-committee last night to inquire what other action at Stratford was contemplated, the committee being given power to act. The principal, Mr. A. H. R. Amess, remarked that the staff had considered several schemes for celebrating the jubilee suitably, but could not finalise the question. “I think that possibly something with a ‘feed’ attached to it would be most appreciated by the pupils even up to the age of 17,” Mr. Amess stated. \
