CRUACHAN’S SHORT HEAD'

SECOND SUCCESSIVE WIN TARATA DOG TRIALS CONTINUED. KEEN HUNTAWAY COMPETITION. Unfavourable weather prevailed yesterday for the second day of the Tarata Sheep Dog Trial Club’s annual meeting, a cold southerly wind being accompanied by occasional showers. The weather added to the difficulties of the , competitors by making the sheep very touchy, especially at close in work. The weather delayed the start in the morning, the first jun taking place: about 9.30 a.m., but once a start was made there was no delay, the 25 remaining ' runs in the short head, drive and yard, in which there were 35 entries, being completed shortly after 3 pun. As on the evening <rf the first day, the work was disappointing, only ten yarding,‘making a total of 13 or just' over one-third, to complete the task. Some of the best working dogs at the yard in Taranaki were unable to yard the sheep, and others did so after considerable trouble; which cost them points. The winner of the event was W. V. McIntyre’s Cruachan, which put up a consistently even performance to gain his second win of the meeting. He dropped five points, which were spread. throughout the course. The second dog, Laddie, was four points away, and J. Hirst’s Glen was third, two points further back. . A start was made with the huntaway, in which there were 24, entries, thirteen runs being decided yesterday. The course is by no means easy. The dogs have to take charge of the sheep, drive them through one set of flags on the flat at the foot, of the hill, slew. them, to the right and drive them diagonally up a grassy slope through the second set of flags. The sheep had to be driven over a’ slight depression and punched up a steep slope, on which there was a little fem and a few logs, through the final set of flags, which were in a grassy hollow. Ten minutes were allowed, and it proved ample to solid huntaways, some completing the course in less , than half ■ the- time. There should- be very keen competition before finality is reached today. The niintaway should be completed this morning, when a start will be made with the local novice event, head; pull and yard. • ‘ .. • 1 " . ' Despite the unfavourable weather there was again a representative atendance, among th» visitors being Mr. H. Sander, New Plymouth, a former resident of Tarata, who with Mr. H.
