NORTH TARANAKI CROQUET.

CLOSE MATCH IN SEMI-FINAL. The winner of the 1935 North Taranaki open croquet championship is Mrs. J. S. McKay. (Manaia), who yesterday in the . semi-final defeated Mrs. D. C. Henderson, North Island champion and North Taranaki women’s champion, and in the final Mrs. H. Langford (Palmerston North). The championship was the one event undecided when the tournament concluded at New Plymouth on Saturday.

Details of play are:— Semi-final: Mrs. McKay beat Mrs. Henderson 26—22, 23—26, 26—7. Final: Mrs. McKay beat Mrs. Langford 26-3, 26-10. In. the final match Mrs. Langford took charge early, picked up a long shot and made three points before she failed, leaving Mrs. McKay a long shot which was missed. Mrs. Langford let Mrs. McKay in with the yellow ball. She carried it to the rover hoop, leaving Mrs. Langford a long shot which she failed to pick up. Mrs. McKay set out a perfect break but failed at the fourth hoop, leaving Mrs. Langford rather an easy shot. She failed, however, to make a point.

Mrs. McKay picked up a long shot and carried the red ball to the peg. She then laid up for the yellow ball. Mrs. Langford hit on again, using the yellow ball, but failed, and Mrs. McKay, picking up the shot, made the rover hoop and pegged out, winning the first game 26—3. The second game began with in and out play, neither making any points until Mrs. Langford let Mrs. McKay in with the yellow ball. Playing excellent croquet, she carried it to the rover hoop, leaving a long shot which Mrs. Langford picked up. She,made four points with the blue ball and failed. She left Mrs. McKay a long shot which she picked up,, carrying the red ball to the fourth hoop. Mrs. Langford could not pick up the long shot, so Mrs. McKay carried her red ball to one back. With more in and out play each made four points. When taking off Mrs. Langford was unfortunate in wiring her ball from that of her opponent, thus once again letting in Mrs. McKay, who carried her red ball to the peg. Mrs. Langford picked up a long shot and made two points with the black ball before she failed. Mrs. McKay picked up the shot with the yellow ball and carried it'to the peg to win the game and the match.
